Courtney Humphries, ’04, has been awarded the 2017 David Perlman Award by the American Geophysical Union for her piece “Where Forests Work Harder,” which addresses how suburban woods can be surprisingly effective at pulling carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. “Where Forests Work Harder” was published December 19, 2016, on CityLab and was praised for its accessibility to non-scientists and for its “confident and fluid writing style.”

Courtney is the author of Superdove: How the Pigeon Took Manhattan … And the World. Her byline has also appeared in Quanta, MIT Technology Review, Politico, NOVA NextHarvard Magazine, Anthropocene, Nautilus, and many more publications. Check out her work at
