The MIT Department of Biology and the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research have joined forces for BioGenesis, a new podcast produced and hosted by GPSW alumni Raleigh McElvery, ’17, and Conor Gearin, ’16. Each 12 to 15-minute-long story-driven episode centers around the central question of what motivates young researchers to pursue a life of science. The first season focuses on stories of surprise—the unexpected twists and turns that have helped shape both research and career paths for MIT graduate students. Students profiled in season one include:

  • Kwadwo Owusu-Boaitey, a soccer player-turned MD/PhD student who studies tissue regeneration
  • Alicia Zamudio, who moved from Mexico to the United States to become a writer before realizing that biology would let her study the essential cellular processes that make human life possible
  • Summer Morrill, a first-generation college student motivated to become a genetic counselor because of how cancer has affected her family

BioGenesis is available on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, and SoundCloud.
